Hello, I'm Ryan. I built Katsanes Photography around a simple conviction: the most meaningful photographs never come from watching the clock or forcing smiles on cue. They happen when you are completely at ease.
Based in Vancouver, Washington, I document families, high school seniors, and creative professionals across Clark County and the greater Portland metropolitan area. Whether we are chasing golden hour along the Columbia River or creating portraits in your home, my goal is always the same: imagery that feels timeless, authentic, and undeniably yours.

The Unhurried Session
We've all seen conveyor-belt photo sessions where a photographer checks their watch and barks “say cheese.” That isn't how real life works. We take the time needed for kids to warm up, for awkwardness to melt away, and for genuine laughter to emerge.
Dimensional Light Control
Rather than treating ambient natural light as an excuse for flat contrast, we utilize intentional off-camera lighting in outdoor and golden-hour settings. This produces rich tonal separation, crisp catchlights in the eyes, and flattering, true-to-life skin tones.

Capturing Presence in Front of the Lens
In 2007, I had the privilege of photographing Steve Jobs in Palo Alto, California. Standing across from one of the most visionary figures of our lifetime crystallized my philosophy behind the camera:
“Great portraits don't happen by forcing someone into an artificial pose. They happen when you respect who they are, observe quietly, and capture genuine presence.”
That same respect for quiet presence is the foundation of every session I photograph today—whether I am working with a high school senior picking up their instrument for the first time in front of the camera, a CEO updating their leadership branding, or a family laughing together along the riverbank.
